The Construction Work Tasters project will officially launch on 20 March 2023

Funded by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), this project will support young people to learn more about the wealth of career opportunities in the construction and built environment sector. By working closely with employers, this project can also help to alleviate some of the recruitment challenges the sector is experiencing.

Construction Work Tasters are a short version of a work experience. Importantly, they are led by employers and take place on site or in the working environment. As the name suggests, however, they offer a taster of the industry and last between half a day and two days.

The launch week will act as a platform to reach more partners across industry, education, the third sector and local government.

The Work Tasters website (www.worktasters.scot) is now live. This is the online hub for the project. Employers can post opportunities; young people can sign up to them. Educators and young people can also register their interest in attending Work Tasters. There might not be Work Tasters in your area yet, but if we know there’s interested young people then we will work with employers to create those opportunities.

As part of Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2023, in partnership with West College Scotland, we will be hosting a STEM Apprenticeship Event at WCS Greenock campus on Thursday 9th March from 1pm-4pm

Come along to speak to local and national employers in Engineering, Construction, Science and Motor Vehicle, many of who will be recruiting for their 2023 Apprenticeship intakes so there will be an opportunity to apply for actual apprenticeship vacancies on the day

We are starting to plan our next campaign which is Scottish Apprenticeship week (SAW)! This week runs from 6^th- 10^th March 2023. We are reaching out to you now to see if you would be interested in supporting any of the following:
 

1. Social media campaign - Apprenticeship Banner photo opportunity. We will come to your premises and take a picture of you and your apprentices/ colleagues with our DYW West SAW Banner. This picture will then be used on our social media platforms throughout SAW week.
2. Talks & Tour of your company with school pupils -  Would you be interested in hosting a talk and tour of your workplace for any of our local schools. Transport will be covered by schools.

What an absolutely brilliant two days we had for #STEMWest22 held at our host organisation West College Scotland on the 21st and 22nd November.

This month we attended the My Climate Path Green Careers Showcase Event at The Studio in Glasgow.

The event hosted a number of Scotland's young people and businesses that demonstrated the green careers currently available across a range of sectors, as well as a number of brilliant guest speakers and a special appearance from First Minister For Further Education, Higher Education & Science of Scotland, Jamie Hepburn.

A group of pupils shared a short presentation on what they had been doing since COP26 in relation to Green Skills and well done to Mearns Castle who also did a showcase at the event. Each school then attended 2 interactive workshops and career talks from Climate Heroes leading the way in sustainability in their industry.

This month we hosted International Chef's Day in partnership with West College Scotland.
 

School pupils from across West Dunbartonshire, East Renfrewshire, Renfrewshire and Inverclyde were split across the three West College Scotland Campuses to enjoy a brilliant day of cooking and demonstrations from multiple brilliant chefs.
